Dry Needling

Targeted treatment for muscle tension and trigger points

Dry needling is a targeted technique that uses fine, sterile needles to stimulate specific areas of muscle and soft tissue. It can be incorporated into a massage treatment to address areas of persistent muscle tension, trigger points and restricted movement.

How does dry needling work?

A fine needle is inserted into a targeted area of muscle to stimulate the underlying tissue. This can produce a local twitch response and may help reduce muscle tension and improve movement.

Dry needling is often used alongside hands-on techniques rather than as a standalone treatment. Your treatment will be tailored to the areas that need attention, with massage and other techniques incorporated where appropriate.

What can dry needling be used for?

Dry needling may be useful for areas affected by:

  • Persistent muscle tightness or tension

  • Trigger points

  • Restricted movement

  • Muscular discomfort

  • Overuse or repetitive strain

It is commonly incorporated into treatment for areas such as the neck, shoulders, back, hips and legs.

What to expect during treatment

Before beginning, your treatment will be discussed with you and any relevant medical or treatment history will be considered. The needles used are fine and sterile, and only single-use needles are used.

You may feel a brief sensation as the needle is inserted or a short muscle twitch during treatment. Some people experience mild tenderness or muscle soreness afterwards, similar to the feeling after exercise.

Dry needling isn't appropriate for everyone. If you have concerns about whether it is suitable for you, this can be discussed before treatment.
